Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis took to Facebook this week to celebrate a major dip in the country’s unemployment rate.
According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (EL.STAT), the unemployment rate fell to 9.6% in June 2024, down from 10.3% in May 2024.
This marks the lowest unemployment rate since June 2009.
Mr. Mitsotakis highlighted the progress, noting, “The unemployment rate in our country has dropped to 9.6 percent the lowest since June 2009. This represents a significant improvement from 10.3 percent in May 2024.”
He emphasized the broader impact of this decline, stating that compared to June 2019, the jobless rate has decreased by 8 percentage points, from 17.5 percent to 9.6 percent.
Additionally, there has been an increase of 400,000 in the number of employed individuals.
The Prime Minister also pointed to specific improvements, including a 2.2 percentage point reduction in female unemployment and a 2 percentage point drop in youth unemployment compared to June 2023.
“These figures demonstrate that our targeted policies are delivering positive results,” Mitsotakis said.
Despite the progress, Mr. Mitsotakis acknowledged ongoing challenges and emphasized that there is still much work to be done.
“We are not complacent,” he stated. “We recognize the challenges our citizens face and remain committed to aligning Greece with European standards in wages, employment, and quality of life. We will continue to strive toward this goal.”
