PASOK elects Fofi Gennimata as new party leader

NEWSROOM IEFIMERIDA.GR

Fofi Gennimata was elected as the 5th PASOK President with 51% of the votes thus becoming the first female leader of the party since its foundation.

The winner needed a plurality of delegate votes to become chairperson and Gennimata won a majority of above 50 percent.

All party members, registered supporters and affiliated supporters elected Gennimata from a field of three candidates Sunday in 350 election centers across Greece after the Panhellenic Socialist Movement Party 10th convention

The contenders for the party’s leadership were Fofi Gennimata, Andreas Loverdos and Odysseus Konstantinopoulos. Current party leader Evangelos Venizelos decided to step down, one year before the completion of his term after the heavy defeat of his party in Greek general elections.

Following the election, Loverdos and Konstantinopoulos both congratulated Mrs. Gennimata and pledged their support during what they both argued was a difficult period for PASOK and the country.

Fofi Genimata is the daughter of Georgios Gennimatas (1939–1994): PASOK MP and Minister for the Interior 1981–84, Health 1984–87, Labor (1987–89) and National Economy (1989, 1993–94)

Genimata was elected super-prefect for Athens and Piraeus 2003–09 and has served as Deputy Minister for Health 2009–10 and Education 2010–11 under the PASOK administration.
