An unexploded World War II bomb found on the premises of the former airport of Elliniko will be detonated under controlled conditions at 08:00 on Friday (August 2), authorities said on Wednesday, warning nearby neighborhoods of the noise.

The bomb is large (around 500 lbs, or 226 kg) and 500 meters away from the closest residences.

Authorities will surround the bomb with high and protective earth embankments to absorb the blast wave. Specialists said the nearby areas will not be disturbed, beyond the noise, and traffic regulations will not be needed, as the bomb is located away from inhabited areas.

As Glyfada Mayor Giorgos Papanikolaou asserted, "WWII may have ended nearly eight decades ago, but its signs are still here in Greece, even below ground. Another bomb was found in the area of development work at the former airport; we are in constant collaboration with all relevant agencies and the specialist Army unit in order that this diffusion process is carried out in an absolutely correct way. There is no reason whatsoever to worry."

Several bombs have been found during work for The Ellinikon project at the former airport.
