A 40-year-old woman from Komotini has tragically become Greece's first femicide victim of 2025. The woman, who was hospitalized for two months following a brutal assault allegedly at the hands of her partner, passed away on January 3rd.
She was admitted to the hospital in Komotini on October 23rd with severe injuries, including broken cervical vertebrae.
She was immediately transferred to the ICU and later moved to a hospital in Bulgaria, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Her partner initially claimed that she had fallen into a roadside ditch, but doctors suspected foul play and alerted authorities.
An investigation by the Komotini Domestic Violence Department confirmed that her injuries were consistent with a violent assault.
The suspect, who is currently in custody, is expected to face charges of intentional homicide. This tragic case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Greece.
In 2024 alone, there were 13 reported femicides, and reports of abuse against women and children by family members doubled compared to the previous year.
This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address domestic violence and protect vulnerable individuals.
