Greek firefighters are battling at least two new wildfires near Athens, hours after containing blazes in other parts of the country.
Over the weekend, strong winds largely hampered firefighting efforts as crews battled the flames.
Dozens of firefighters, clad in full gear and supported by 23 water-dropping aircraft, fought with hoses to control a blaze in a sparsely populated area near the town of Keratea, approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Athens. Authorities ordered evacuations, including those of summer camps in the area, as flames from burning pine and olive trees threatened houses.

North of the capital, firefighters were battling another fire that erupted in the community of Stamata, burning through a lush pine forest and sending smoke plumes billowing over parts of the city. The fire did not pose an immediate threat to homes.
Hot and windy conditions across much of Greece have fueled numerous wildfires over the weekend. Officials have urged residents to stay away from forested areas to minimise the risk of additional ignitions.
Meanwhile, authorities said late Sunday they had arrested a foreign national in Nea Makri on charges of arson.
His details were not revealed but authorities said they apprehended him as he was setting ire to a grassy area near a stream in Rafina, northeast of Athens.
It is not the first time the individual has faced charges related to arson. On June 16, 2024, the suspect was arrested for the same offence and received a suspended sentence.
