Western Macedonia is preparing for a blast of winter weather, with heavy snow and icy conditions expected to impact the region.
Authorities have announced school closures, travel restrictions, and mandatory use of snow chains to ensure safety.
The Scientific Committee for Risk Assessment, under the leadership of Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias, convened on Sunday to assess the latest meteorological data.
In light of the severe weather forecast, the committee has implemented the following measures:
School closures: All schools in Western Macedonia will be closed on Monday, January 13th.
Heavy vehicle ban: Heavy vehicles will be prohibited from traveling on the Egnatia Highway between the Drososchoiri and Polymylos toll stations from Sunday at 6:00 PM until Monday at 2:00 PM. The ban also applies to sections of the E65 highway and connecting provincial roads.
Mandatory snow chains: Snow chains are mandatory for all vehicles traveling on the entire road network in the regions of Epirus, Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and Western Thessaly.
These measures are aimed at minimizing disruptions and ensuring the safety of residents and travelers during the expected snowstorm. Authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay informed about weather updates.
