The discovery of three subterranean lakes within the underground section of the Kifisos River has sparked concerns about the structural integrity of the riverbed and surrounding urban areas.
A team of speleologists from the "Geomythiki" group made the unexpected discovery while exploring uncharted sections of the river's underground channel.
The lakes were found at three locations: near the Podoniftis stream in Nea Chalkidona, at the Kifisos KTEL bus terminal, and near the KTEO vehicle inspection station in Peristeri.
The speleologists, who entered the riverbed from both ends to map the 7-kilometer underground section, were forced to halt their exploration twice due to the presence of the lakes.
The "Geomythiki" team has expressed serious concerns about potential erosion of the river's foundational structures caused by the underground water.
They are urging authorities to take immediate action, including draining the lakes and conducting a thorough engineering assessment of the riverbed's stability.
"The underground channel at the third lake is in the worst condition we have ever seen," the team warned, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The potential for further degradation of the Kifisos infrastructure poses a significant risk to the surrounding urban landscape and could lead to sinkholes or other structural failures.
