The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has informed Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides that all relevant parties have agreed to move forward with plans for an expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue.
The development marks a significant step toward addressing the long-standing division on the island, with hopes of establishing a path to sustainable peace.
The planned expanded meeting, which will convene key stakeholders, is designed to build on discussions from an informal dinner held in October. Guterres shared this update with Christodoulides on the sidelines of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
According to sources from the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Guterres assured Christodoulides that the framework for the meeting was advancing smoothly, with broad consensus from all parties involved.
He highlighted that UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo will soon lead preparations for the event, underscoring his commitment to seeing concrete outcomes from the discussions.
This renewed diplomatic effort comes as the UN continues to play a central role in facilitating dialogue to resolve Cyprus’s long-standing divisions.
Also during the COP29 conference, President Christodoulides met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, following up on discussions from their recent meeting in Budapest, signaling continued momentum toward reconciliation efforts.
