SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance member Popi Tsapanidou will assume the seat of resigned state deputy for the Greek diaspora Othonas Iliopoulos, as she said in a post after meeting with the Greek parliament's presidium on Tuesday.
The resignation had led to several days' media speculation on whether all runners up would give up the position so that main opposition party leader Stefanos Kasselakis could take a seat in parliament.
Before being summoned officially by parliament, Tsapanidou met at SYRIZA headquarters with the director of Kasselakis' office, Manolis Kapnisakis.
In her post after the meetings, the former party spokesperson said, "Taking into account the fact that SYRIZA's state deputy ballot has been validated by the Greek people in two successive elections, I am assuming the supreme responsibility of responding to what the constitution and the Greek people command."
Tsapanidou will be sworn in as deputy on Friday.
