A 33-year-old tourist was injured while water skiing in Rhodes, officials reported.
Details of the foreigner were not disclosed. But authorities said he was rushed to a local hospital for treatment after his leg was hit by the propeller of a speedboat while skiing in Faliraki, Rhodes.
The man suffered minor injuries and has since then been discharged. An investigation led to the arrest of two people linked to the water sports facility for negligence.
This accident gives rise to safety and security involving watersports, not least as Greece’s peak tourism season is set to begin.
According to the Safe Water Sports annual report, in 2021, 342 people lost their lives in water-related incidents in Greece, with the majority occurring at sea. Experts say the finds highlight the need for stringent safety measures and regulations to protect both tourists and locals engaging in such activities.
Greece has implemented mandatory lifeguard coverage on highly frequented beaches during its peak tourist seasons, beginning from June 1.
Authorities, however, are calling for heightened vigilance and compliance with safety regulations among water sports providers.
They say the goal is to ensure that Greece’s reputation as a top destination for sea sports is matched by its commitment to the safety of its visitors.
