The shipping ministry approved the set up and operation of two temporary desalination plans on the island of Tinos on Tuesday.
The licenses were approved by Deputy Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy Minister Stefanos Gikas, following a recommendation by the General Secretariat of the Aegean & Island Policy.
One will operate in the Kardiani area (west) and the other in the Panormos area (northeast). Each will have a capacity of 200 cubic meters a day.
Gikas expressed his practical support to local government organizations on islands, in response to the unprecedented situation resulting from the climate crisis.
The General Secretariat has implemented over 300 projects on 75 islands in the last 3 years, while 18 licenses for temporary desalination plants have been issued in the first 7 months of 2024. In the 2018-2023 period, 25 such licenses had been issued in total.
Under the direction of Minister Christos Stylianides, the ministry is expected to introduce a series of interventions on the islands to resolve in the best way possible the water management issues.
