The government has responded by declaring a one-month state of emergency in Volos and nearby areas, allowing for quicker action to address the marine pollution. Support measures for affected businesses include subsidies for lost income, tax and insurance relief, and a promotional campaign to boost tourism in the future.
Despite the fish kill, authorities maintain that water quality at most beaches remains safe for swimming, based on ongoing testing. However, swimming is currently prohibited as a precaution until the cleanup is complete.
The cause of the mass die-off is under investigation, with a combination of climate change and irrigation/drainage issues being suspected. The lake where the fish originated, Lake Karla, has experienced both floods and drought, contributing to the problem.
