The new Metro system in Thessaloniki is already having a positive impact on the city, with a significant reduction in car traffic and faster commutes for residents.
Research shows that since the Metro opened, there are 12,400 fewer cars entering the city center each day – a 10% decrease.
This drop in traffic has led to noticeable improvements in travel times on major roads.
For example, commuters on routes like 3rd September – Ag. Dimitrios – Lagada – 26th October – Leof. Nikis are saving around 2 minutes during both morning and afternoon rush hours.
Interestingly, the study found that while fewer cars are coming into the city center from the west, there's actually been a slight increase in cars entering from the east.
This suggests that people are parking their cars and taking the Metro, highlighting the need for more park-and-ride facilities to make this option even more convenient.
The Metro's success in reducing traffic and improving commute times demonstrates the positive impact of investing in public transportation. As more people choose the Metro over driving, Thessaloniki is becoming a more efficient and environmentally friendly city.
