A delegation from main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance led by the party's parliamentary group president Nikos Pappas on Saturday laid a wreath at the monument commemorating the 1973 student uprising at the Athens Polytechnic, against the junta then ruling Greece.
In a statement afterward, Pappas said:
"We honour those who fought to restore democracy in Greece. We call on the Greek people to participate en masse in the events for the anniversary of the Polytechnic. So that there is enough bread for everyone. So that education is free for everyone. So that freedom is never tested again in our homeland. We will fight a ceaseless fight against the far right, which is attempting to raise its head again. But also against those who wish our people to fall into oblivion and forget what happened in the dark periods of past decades. We will fight everywhere, both in Parliament and in the streets, for democracy, freedom, for justice."
