Greece's main opposition Syriza party, finds itself in deep turmoil, not only due to internal power struggles but also because of a severe financial crisis.
The party’s bank accounts have been frozen after a supplier, owed approximately €200,000, initiated legal action to recover the debt.
Party officials have acknowledged the financial issue and stated that efforts are underway to settle the debt. They remain optimistic that the situation will be resolved soon, possibly by tomorrow.
However, they emphasized that while Syriza is committed to repaying its debts, there can occasionally be delays in the process.
This financial blow comes at a precarious time for the party, which is already dealing with significant internal friction.
Recently, party leader Stefanos Kasselakis was ousted after a no-confidence motion passed by Syriza’s Central Committee, with his dismissal being officially confirmed by the Political Secretariat.
In response, Mr. Kasselakis revoked a power of attorney he had granted in April to Christos Mavrokefalidis, thereby rescinding all previous instructions.
Mr. Kasselakis' legal advisor, Charalambos Pelekis, explained the rationale behind the move:
"Since Mr. Stefanos Kasselakis no longer receives information from party leadership regarding financial and administrative matters, it is only natural that he cannot be held responsible for these decisions. Therefore, Mr. Kasselakis revoked the power of attorney granted to Mr. Christos Mavrokefalidis as of Friday, September 13, 2024."
Syriza insiders, however, downplayed the significance of this action, clarifying that the Political Secretariat had already issued a new power of attorney to Mr. Mavrokefalidis followingMr. Kasselakis’ removal. They noted that the revocation has no practical effect on the party’s financial management.
As SYRIZA grapples with internal divisions and a financial crisis, the future of the party hangs in the balance, with its ability to resolve both issues being crucial in the coming days.
