Authorities on Thursday detained the captain and first officer of a superyacht involved in a forest fire on the cosmopolitan island of Hydra.
Eleven other crew members also arrested in the incident were released on bail, but barred from exiting the country, required, instead, to report to authorities every month.
Of the 11, seven were ordered to each post €10,000 bail; the remaining four, each at €20,000.
A Greek investigating magistrate issued the orders after the 13 appeared to testify in connection with arson related charges for allegedly firing fireworks over the island of Hydra late Friday, setting off a forest fire that razed more than 300 stremmas of pine forest.
All of the crew members denied wrongdoing but an investigation conducted since then showed that all naval distress flares retained on the luxury yacht remained untouched in their designated positions on the vessel. The captain promptly informed the Fire Department about the fire that broke out on Hydra.
The investigation into the incident continues as authorities seek to determine the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding it.
