Stefanos Kasselakis, leader of the opposition party Syriza, has issued a strong critique of the Greek government, accusing it of deepening social inequality and failing to address the rising cost of living.
During his vacation, Mr. Kasselakis took to social media to voice his concerns, pointing out what he sees as the government's neglect in managing key economic issues.
Mr. Kasselakis particularly targeted the Minister of Shipping, Christos Stylianides, for his lack of urgency in dealing with soaring ferry ticket prices, noting that action is not expected until September.
He also criticized Deputy Minister Sofia Voultepsi for her recent comments suggesting that those who can't afford to vacation on the islands should opt for their villages instead.
"Greek islands have become a luxury that only a few can enjoy," Kasselakis remarked.
He urged Greek citizens to reflect on how the country has reached such a state of inequality. "How did we come to a point where basic goods are out of reach for many, while the wealthy thrive? How did we get to a place where even simple pleasures like lamb or feta cheese are now considered luxuries? How have we ended up fearing the cost of running an air conditioner or relying on private healthcare for necessary surgeries?"
Mr. Kasselakis warned that these issues, exacerbated by what he describes as government propaganda, have become normalized, masking the serious social injustices facing modern Greece.
He called on the public to recognize and challenge this growing divide before it worsens further.
