The race to determine Greece’s next President of the Republic is intensifying as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis prepares to announce his decision in January.

This pivotal moment of Mr. Mitsotakis’ second term is already generating political ripples, with potential candidates and party dynamics taking center stage.

Mr. Mitsotakis has signaled his intention to propose a figure capable of uniting Parliament and fostering broad consensus.

“The President must meet the role’s requirements and, ideally, secure the widest possible support in Parliament,” he stated recently.

While maintaining unity within his New Democracy (ND) party is critical, Mr. Mitsotakis appears to be exploring names that could also appeal to opposition parties.

Among the most-discussed candidates is former Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, whose name has been in circulation since September.

However, Mr. Dendias has repeatedly ruled out any interest in the position.

Speaking at a conference, he said: “I have no intention of pursuing this role, as it would not benefit the institution or my political path.”

Despite his consistent denials, his stature within ND and his relatively positive standing among opposition members keep him in the spotlight.

Other potential nominees include Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras and former Prime Minister Lucas Papademos. Mr. Stournaras recently dismissed the speculation as “inappropriate” out of respect for the current president, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Yet, his carefully worded response left room for interpretation, with some viewing it as a strategic move to remain in consideration.

Mr. Papademos, noted for his role in leading Greece through a coalition government during the financial crisis, is seen as a candidate who could garner bipartisan support.

Notably, Mr. Mitsotakis has confirmed that Ms. Sakellaropoulou is unlikely to be proposed for a second term. His deliberations are expected to intensify over the holidays, with close aides reporting that he plans to make his decision during this reflective period.

The upcoming announcement will likely have far-reaching implications for Greece’s political landscape. Beyond shaping the presidency’s future, Mr. Mitsotakis’ choice will reveal his strategic priorities for uniting Parliament, solidifying his party, and navigating the country’s evolving political dynamics.
