A total of 87 SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance deputies and members of the Central Committee called for the immediate convening of party organs, in a letter to party leader Stefanos Kasselakis on Thursday.
In their letter, the main opposition members noted that SYRIZA has lost strength and that "the great majority of society does not see an alternative progressive proposal."
They criticized "divisive tactics, dismissals, and targeting of party officials" and said that the sudden start of a discussion on "ethics and transparency" at the main opposition party is harmful at a time when "we should be levelling highly critical opposition to the government of New Democracy."
The 87 also criticized the decision to suspend the daily publication of the newspaper Avghi - making a decision affecting employees there and a decision of a historical nature - without discussing it in a party organ.
"The convening of the Central Committee ought to be done immediately and over two days, in order to provide an opportunity for all Central Committee to take a stand," the letter-writers said, charging that the Political Secretariat and the Central Committee have been 'inactivated' recently.
Response
Sources at the party headquarters aid that "SYRIZA-PA and its president Stefanos Kasselakis were never afraid of dialog," in response to the letter.
"All opinions are welcome and of course respected, but it makes one wonder why they were publicized early, since the organs have already been convened. As is well known, the Political Secretariat will meet on July 4 and the Central Committee on July 7," they added.
