With a major winter storm bearing down on Greece, authorities in Attica are requiring all vehicles to be equipped with snow chains or winter tires starting Friday night at 10 pm.
The mandatory order, issued in response to a severe weather warning from the National Meteorological Service, will remain in effect until further notice.
In addition to the snow chain requirement, heavy vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons will be banned from several major roads in Attica, regardless of whether they have snow chains.
The restriction will be in place from 10 pm Friday to 4 pm Saturday on the Athens-Lamia highway in both directions, from the Kalyftaki interchange in Kifissia to the northern border of Attica. Heavy vehicles will also be prohibited on the Elefsina-Thiva road during this time.
Similar snow chain requirements have been issued for several other regions in central and northern Greece, including Viotia, Evia, Fthiotida, Thessaly, Western Macedonia, and parts of Central Macedonia.
The measures are aimed at ensuring safety and preventing traffic disruptions as heavy snow and icy conditions are expected to impact much of the country. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, stay informed about weather updates, and adhere to the new regulations to ensure safe travel during the storm.
