Greece is bracing for a bout of severe weather, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail expected to lash most parts of the country from late Thursday to Saturday.
The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an emergency weather bulletin, warning of adverse conditions. In response, the Civil Protection Ministry has announced that it is on high alert and has developed an emergency action plan, particularly in light of the recent devastating wildfires that ravaged parts of Attica and mainland Greece.
Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias met with the Scientific Committee for Risk Assessment and representatives from various ministries, regions, and security forces to finalize the plan for the impending severe weather.
According to EMY, a cold front moving into Greece is expected to cause a significant deterioration in weather across most of the mainland. Heavy rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by frequent lightning and local hailstorms, are highly likely. These phenomena will be temporarily accompanied by very strong winds.
Meteorologists warn that the cold front could create unpredictable weather patterns, increasing the risk of flooding. Authorities are strongly advising against travel during this period.
