The historic mining landscape of Serifos has been included in the World Monuments Fund's (WMF) 2024 Watch List, raising concerns about the site's vulnerability due to tourism development.
The island's mining relics, including loading stairs in Megalo Livadi and Koutalas, are at risk of deterioration.
The WMF, which selected 25 sites from 200 nominations worldwide, emphasized the need to protect Serifos' "invaluable industrial heritage."
Local archaeologist Ourania Vizyinou explained that the nomination was initiated by the local community and supported by academic institutions.
Professor Ioannis Spilanis of the University of the Aegean expressed hope that the listing will encourage collaboration between the Culture Ministry and local stakeholders to ensure the preservation of this important cultural heritage site.
