Seismologists are closely monitoring earthquake activity in the Cyclades as fears of a larger quake prompt some Santorini residents to leave the island.
Disaster management expert Kostas Synolakis told Skai TV the situation is an “evolving phenomenon” with uncertain outcomes. “Will we see a minor volcanic eruption? A stronger earthquake? Will the activity stop on its own? How long will this last?” he asked.
Mr. Synolakis ruled out a major eruption at the Nea Kameni volcano but acknowledged concerns about seismic escalation. “If the earthquakes spread further, the fault line that may form could be much larger,” he said, adding it will take time to determine the magnitude of the activity. Authorities and experts continue to assess the situation, urging residents and visitors to remain alert but calm.
