The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias, convened a wide-ranging meeting on Wednesday to discuss the mild seismic-volcanic activity observed in the area of the Santorini caldera.
The meeting focused on implementing necessary preventive measures to better prepare civil protection efforts in Santorini, considering its unique geological conditions.
According to the recommendation of the Permanent Scientific Committee for the Monitoring of the Greek Volcanic Arc, an increase in activity is recorded in the central fault of Kameni in the northern part of the caldera. For this reason, the Scientific Committee is constantly monitoring the phenomenon, analysing the data, and updating the planning of the corresponding prevention actions.
As stated in an announcement by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, this volcanic activity is similar to that of 2011-2012, which lasted about 14 months and was completed without a volcanic event. According to scientists, based on the data available so far, there is no cause for concern.
