Authorities are on alert in Santorini as seismic activity continues, raising concerns after a series of earthquakes.
The strongest tremor, a magnitude 4.7, struck Sunday at 7:45 p.m., following a 4.5 magnitude quake just four minutes earlier. Smaller aftershocks have continued in the area between Santorini and Amorgos.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held an emergency meeting Sunday evening to discuss the situation. Participants included the Minister of Civil Protection, military and scientific experts, and seismologists joining remotely from Santorini.
Following the meeting, the minister addressed the public, stressing that the measures taken are precautionary.
“We continue to assess all seismic data, and updates will be provided regularly,” the minister said. “I urge residents to follow official guidance and adhere to safety measures.”
Earlier Sunday, the Climate Crisis Ministry announced new precautionary measures for Santorini, Anafi, Ios, and Amorgos.
Schools in these areas will be closed Monday, and residents are advised to avoid large indoor gatherings, abandoned buildings, and ports.
Authorities also recommend securing loose structures and using safe routes to avoid landslides.
The Fire Department has placed emergency response teams on high alert, deploying additional personnel, including search-and-rescue units with drones and trained dogs, to Santorini.
Despite the increased activity, scientists say the situation is being closely monitored.
Seismologists note similar seismic patterns have been observed in the past without a major event.
Authorities continue to urge vigilance while ensuring all necessary precautions are in place.
