Santorini was rattled by a series of earthquakes late Tuesday, with five tremors over magnitude 4.0 in 30 minutes, including a 4.8 magnitude quake, according to Greece’s Geodynamic Institute.
The activity, centered between Santorini and Amorgos, peaked at 10:00 p.m., following earlier quakes of 4.1, 4.3, and 4.3.
Seismologists are unsure if the main shock has occurred, as a 5.0 magnitude quake was recorded in recent days.
Additional tremors over 4.0 magnitude were reported near Arkesini on Amorgos, including a 4.4 at 10:05 p.m., followed by two at 4.2.
The ongoing activity has made many Santorini residents anxious.
Dozens of people, mainly workers fearing a larger quake, left the island on the last ferry to Piraeus.
Government Meets on Santorini Earthquake Activity
Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni led an emergency meeting at the Ministry of Tourism to discuss the continuing seismic activity near Santorini.
Senior officials, including the ministry's general secretary, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) secretary-general and vice president, and the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels president, participated.
The meeting focused on the potential impact on tourism and visitor safety.
Kefalogianni earlier attended an interministerial meeting at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection with Minister Vasilis Kikilias, focusing on emergency preparedness.
Seismologist Kostas Papazachos provided an update on the seismic situation.
