Repeat elections have taken place in Himara following the removal of Fredis Beleris from his position as mayor by Albanian authorities.

Mr.Beleris called on the Greek minority to support Petros Gikourias, the "Omonia" candidate, for mayor. Mr. Gikourias ran against Vangelis Tavos, a former Vlore prefect supported by the Albanian Socialist Party and Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Results are expected early Monday morning.

From his prison cell, Mr. Beleris urged the Greek minority to participate in the election, emphasizing the importance of democracy and their rights. He expressed his confidence in Gikourias and encouraged voters to turn out in large numbers.

Mr. Beleris also raised concerns about irregularities in the election process, including reports of issues with voter transportation and expired ID cards preventing people from voting. He criticized the Central Election Commission's decision to hold the elections and called on the government to ensure that all voters can exercise their rights without interference.

Mr Beleris encouraged his fellow citizens to resist any intimidation and to vote, highlighting the importance of their participation in shaping the future of Himara.
