In a disturbing incident that has rattled the media community, Alexia Bakogianni, a leading journalist and the prime minister’s niece, has filed charges against Stefanos Chios for assaulting her in public.
The alleged confrontation took place in broad daylight at a popular Athens establishment, leading to an immediate arrest warrant for Chios.
Ms. Bakogianni, the daughter of a leading MP, was reportedly sitting outside the restaurant when Mr. Chios approached her. Without any apparent reason, he is said to have begun accosting her, before moving to strike her with a glass bottle.
Authorities responded quickly, escorting Mr. Chios away.
Police said they were investigating the incident. Still, the case has sparked sweeping public debate over the safety of journalists and the alarming rise in hostility towards media professionals.
