Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has chosen to remain silent on his decision regarding the next President of Greece.
In an interview with local broadcaster Skai, Mr. Mitsotakis firmly declined to provide any details when asked if the issue of same-sex couples would affect his choice.
"I will not say anything about this for one reason: it would be institutionally inappropriate,” he said. “ I have great respect for the Presidency and the President, both as an individual and as an institution. It would be improper to discuss this before her term ends."
The Greek leader said he “would not entertain” any opinions from MPs on the matter until the official discussion begins in February 2025.
"I will not tolerate any opinions from MPs regarding the Presidency, as it would challenge the institution, not the individual," he added.
Still, Mr.Mitsotakis assured that the decision would not be made in isolation.
"I do not make decisions alone. I fully respect the constitutional requirement that the President must have broad acceptance," he said.
