President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou received the "Democracy Award of the City of Athens" from Athens Mayor Haris Doukas on Wednesday evening as part of the Athens Democracy Forum.
The award recognizes the Greek citizem's struggles for democracy and freedom that led to the fall of the dictatorship and the Metapolitefsi (restoration of democracy).
Sakellaropoulou thanked Doukas and the forum organizers for the invitation to accept the award, emphasizing that it is presented in the name of the Greek citizens for their battles against the dictatorship.
"Fifty years later, we recall the memories of resistance and the transition to democracy. We return to a critical period of the 1970s, not only for Greece but also for Southern Europe. In Greece, Spain, and Portugal, the fall of regimes and the restoration of democracy and the rule of law marked a significant historical turning point. In these countries, major political, economic, and social changes occurred, making their accession to the European Union possible," Sakellaropoulou noted.
