Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis wrote to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday with proposals for a different approach in electric energy, natural gas, and pollutant emissions.
In terms of electric energy, he called for a new push in the internal EU market for comparable prices. He said one EU member pays three-digit prices for electricity while another pays none. Mitsotakis proposed a special task force for the increase of transborder flows wherever there are significant price differences, while Europe needs to think differently about its power networks.
Writing about natural gas, the Greek PM said that a new push was needed for the security of gas supplies, and to import natural gas at competitive prices. The cost of overregulating pollutant emissions must be restricted. Instead of an overwhelmingly regulatory approach, it would be better to introduce 'the rule of one goal', he asserted.
These ideas, Mitsotakis said, may help Europe implement the program for competitiveness, and said he looked forward to discussing these ideas at the European Council.
The Greek PM's letter is also accompanied by a chart with wholesale electricity prices in the European Union.
