The municipality of Naousa is taking steps to support new families by approving a payment of €1,000 for each child born in the city in 2024.
The decision, made by the City Council, aims to address the declining birth rate, as Naousa’s population has fallen from 34,000 in 2011 to 30,500 today, according to Mayor Nikos Koutsogiannis.
Koutsogiannis noted that the deindustrialization of recent decades has led many young people to seek work in other cities.
“This support has both practical and symbolic value. Young people understand that they are not alone,” he stressed.
The allowance will be paid retroactively for children born since January 1, 2024.
To receive it, parents must apply, meet specific income criteria, and at least one parent must be a registered resident of Naousa.
