Lefteris Avgenakis has been expelled from the ruling New Democracy parliamentary group after footage emerged showing him assaulting an airport employee.
He was referred to the party’s ethics committee by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis who personally intervened as the allegations emerged Wednesday. Meantime, an Athens prosecutor has launched a probe into the incident to review allegations of assaulting a staff member at the airport in Athens, disrupting public services, and causing damage to public property.
Any further legal action will require lifting Mr. Avgenakis’ parliamentary immunity. Video released this week showed Mr. Avgenakis turning violent against an airport employee when he was blocked from boarding a flight to Crete after the gate had closed.
Earlier on Wednesday, Mr. Avgenakis said he would not give up his parliamentary seat.
