Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the northeastern region of Evros on Thursday, highlighting its growing strategic importance and outlining a comprehensive plan for its future development.

During his visit to Orestiada, a key town near the Turkish border, Mitsotakis emphasized the crucial role the region plays in Greece’s national security, energy infrastructure, and its potential to contribute to the reconstruction of Ukraine once the war with Russia ends.

Evros, bordering both Turkey and Bulgaria, has become increasingly significant in recent years due to its location and infrastructure.

The port of Alexandroupolis, in particular, has gained prominence as a critical logistics hub for NATO and EU military operations, facilitating the transportation of military supplies and equipment to Eastern Europe.

Amid tensions with Turkey, military supplies have been redirected to Alexandroupolis, avoiding the Turkish-controlled Dardanelles and Bosporus straits. The prime minister highlighted how this shift has enhanced Greece’s strategic role in regional security and provided economic benefits to the local community.

Alexandroupolis is also poised to become a major player in Europe’s energy landscape. A new offshore Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) near the port is expected to begin operations soon, allowing liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be imported and distributed to countries across Southeast Europe.

Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that this project is essential for the EU's efforts to reduce its reliance on Russian gas and strengthen energy security. The region’s growing network of gas pipelines further cements its role as a critical energy corridor for Europe.

Looking to the future, Mr. Mitsotakis pointed to Evros’ strategic location as a potential gateway for the reconstruction of Ukraine once the conflict ends. With its robust transport and energy infrastructure, the region is well-positioned to support post-war rebuilding efforts, providing a base for supplies and expertise.

He assured that Greece would actively participate in these efforts, leveraging its logistical advantages to assist in Ukraine's recovery.

During his visit, Mr. Mitsotakis also addressed the devastating wildfires that swept through parts of Evros in 2023, particularly the Dadi Forest, which suffered one of the largest wildfires in Europe that year.

To help the region recover, the prime minister announced a three-year suspension of property taxes for areas most affected by the fires, including Soufli, Orestiada, and Didymoteicho.

Additionally, the government will provide subsidies and incentives to attract new residents, revitalizing local economies that were severely impacted by the disaster.

Mr. Mitsotakis referenced the success of the "Evia model," a framework used in another fire-ravaged region, where significant government investment helped rebuild infrastructure and stimulate the economy. He promised that a similar approach would be implemented in Evros to ensure long-term recovery and growth.

The prime minister also discussed the ongoing challenge of illegal migration in the region, which remains a significant entry point for migrants attempting to cross into the European Union from Turkey. Mr. Mitsotakis recalled the migration crisis of early 2020, when Turkey allowed thousands of migrants to attempt to cross into Greece, leading to heightened tensions and a robust response from the EU. He emphasized that this event changed the EU’s approach to border security, leading to stricter policies and more resources to protect its external borders.

Mr. Mitsotakis reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to strengthening border security in Evros, including expanding the border fence along the Evros River and increasing patrols to deter illegal crossings. He stressed that Greece would continue to protect its borders while cooperating with the EU to manage migration flows humanely and in accordance with international law.

As part of the broader development plan for Evros, Mr. Mitsotakis also announced increased funding for Democritus University of Thrace.

The additional support aims to enhance research and innovation in key sectors such as energy, agriculture, and environmental sustainability, helping to drive economic growth and attract investment to the region.
