Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed several pressing national issues during an interview with state broadcaster ERT, signaling a measured approach to Greece’s political and economic challenges.
The prime minister confirmed that the announcement of his nominee for President of the Republic would come in the latter half of January, in line with constitutional requirements.
Playfully referencing his holiday plans, he remarked that he would reflect on the decision while in Crete, where he could enjoy both "mountains and the sea."
Mr. Mitsotakis outlined his government’s strategy to combat digital addiction among minors, emphasizing a balanced approach that avoids heavy-handed restrictions.
A new policy framework, set to be unveiled on December 30, will propose a "digital age of maturity" at 15 years.
The prime minister underscored the role of parents as key allies in these efforts and expressed Greece's aspiration to lead in shaping a protective digital environment for children.
“Just as banning mobile phones in schools has improved students’ focus and engagement,” Mr. Mitsotakis stated, “our comprehensive strategy aims to provide European solutions to an issue affecting every Greek family.”
Discussing the recently approved budget, Mr. Mitsotakis defended his government’s track record of tax cuts, economic stability, and targeted relief measures.
He criticized Pasok’s proposals on banking reforms as inconsistent and poorly conceived, arguing that his government’s approach—reducing bank fees and bolstering competition—provides more practical benefits to citizens and small businesses.
The prime minister also highlighted Greece's strong growth prospects amidst challenges in the European economy.
He acknowledged that economic slowdowns in larger EU nations like Germany might necessitate bolder decisions but expressed confidence in Greece’s ability to outpace other Eurozone economies.
“Our policies focus on reducing inequality, funding healthcare and education, and ensuring tax fairness,” he stated, adding that his government had already eliminated 72 taxes and planned further reductions, including cutting employer contributions and abolishing the business levy in 2025.
Following his trip to Lebanon, Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized Greece's role as a reliable partner in the Middle East, particularly with Orthodox communities in Syria and Lebanon.
He reaffirmed Greece’s leadership within NATO, noting that the country spends over 3% of GDP on defense, a benchmark surpassed by few allies.
When asked about former U.S. President Donald Trump’s praise for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Mr. Mitsotakis stressed the robust state of U.S.-Greek relations, which he described as stronger than ever.
Looking ahead, Mr. Mitsotakis outlined his administration’s priorities for 2025, focusing on structural reforms, social investment, and fostering a fairer economic system.
He reiterated his government’s commitment to ensuring that economic growth translates into tangible benefits for Greek families.
While acknowledging the complex global environment, the prime minister expressed confidence in Greece’s ability to navigate challenges and build a prosperous future.
“We have a clear strategy and the resilience to thrive, even as others face uncertainty,” he concluded.
