Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met privately with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi ahead of the 10th Trilateral Summit between Greece, Egypt, and Cyprus in Cairo.
Discussions underscored the strong ties between Greece and Egypt and their shared role in promoting peace and stability in a region marked by ongoing challenges.
The leaders reviewed plans to convene the Greece-Egypt High Cooperation Council in the near future, an initiative aimed at deepening the strategic partnership established during their joint declaration in Cairo in March.
Talks also focused on migration, with Mr. Mitsotakis and El-Sisi highlighting Egypt’s pivotal role in curbing illegal migration routes, particularly those reaching Crete via Libya.
The leaders explored strategies to strengthen legal migration pathways and expand bilateral agreements for seasonal workers.
Regional and international developments also took center stage, with particular emphasis on the situation in Syria.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the need for an inclusive political process involving all Syrian communities. They emphasized that any long-term resolution must respect international law, protect minority rights, and safeguard Syria’s cultural heritage.
The summit expanded on trilateral cooperation in energy, where Greece, Egypt, and Cyprus reiterated their commitment to enhancing energy security.
A key focus was the Greece-Egypt Interconnection (GREGY), a landmark project that will establish an energy bridge to transfer renewable energy from North Africa to Europe.
Discussions also addressed carbon capture and storage technology as a growing priority in the context of European decarbonization goals.
Mr. Mitsotakis praised the robust turnout at the parallel business forum, highlighting investment opportunities in areas such as defense, port collaboration, and cultural exchanges. He also stressed the significance of the Cyprus issue, expressing full support for a fair and viable solution under UN Security Council resolutions.
The Greek Prime Minister noted that such a resolution would bolster political stability and economic prosperity throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.
The leaders concluded with a shared commitment to peace, stability, and adherence to international law in addressing regional challenges.
