Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has underscored the benefits of the new Attiki Odos contract and the broader privatization initiatives completed since the 2023 elections, which have generated substantial revenue for the state.
In a social media post, Mr. Mitsotakis underscored the impact of these actions, citing lower toll fees, increased tax revenues, and enhanced services for citizens. Last week, Parliament ratified the new Attiki Odos contract, marking the 11th privatization since the 2023 elections, with total state revenues amounting to €7.8 billion.
“These targeted privatizations not only strengthen public finances but also improve the daily lives of citizens,” Mr. Mitsotakis said.
One immediate benefit is the reduction in toll fees on Attiki Odos: from Sunday, drivers now pay €2.50 instead of €2.80, while vehicles transporting people with disabilities, including vans for disabled passengers, are exempt from toll charges.
Mr. Mitsotakis also highlighted the fiscal gains from the new contract, which brought in a record €3.27 billion for the state, reducing public debt by 1.5 percentage points of GDP. The government will also receive a portion of the concessionaire’s annual revenue moving forward.
According to the prime minister, this wave of privatizations demonstrates how strategic initiatives can benefit both the public purse and the quality of life for citizens.
