Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for concerted efforts to ensure stability in Syria and emphasized Greece’s pivotal role in protecting the Greek Orthodox community there.
Speaking at a press conference in Brussels following the European Union Summit, Mr. Mitsotakis described the collapse of the Assad regime as a turning point and stressed the importance of safeguarding Syria’s territorial integrity and the rights of its religious minorities.
Mr. Mitsotakis, alongside Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, cautioned European leaders about potential risks stemming from Turkey's actions in the region. He specifically warned against attempts by Turkey to establish an Exclusive Economic Zone with Syria’s new regime, reiterating Greece's rejection of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum as illegal.
On migration, Mr. Mitsotakis advocated for voluntary returns to Syria, ensuring that returnees have their basic needs met upon arrival. He emphasized that resettlement must align with broader efforts to secure stability in the war-torn nation.
Turning to the Ukraine conflict, Mr. Mitsotakis reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Kyiv, stressing the need to prevent Ukraine from being disadvantaged in future peace talks.
He also announced an upcoming Greek-led initiative to convene an informal EU summit in Belgium in February, focusing exclusively on European defense. Mr. Mitsotakis called for increased EU resources for defense and the creation of a European Defense Fund, framing these efforts as a signal of Europe’s readiness to shoulder greater geopolitical responsibilities alongside its transatlantic allies.
Addressing a contentious exchange with North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Mr. Mitsotakis clarified that in formal EU meetings, Mr. Mickoski adhered to the official name, “North Macedonia,” in compliance with the Prespa Agreement.
He underscored Greece’s commitment to ensuring that both countries respect the accord as a prerequisite for North Macedonia’s EU accession.
Mr. Mitsotakis’ remarks reflect Greece's strategic approach to regional stability, defense collaboration, and adherence to international agreements, solidifying its role as a key player in shaping EU policy on these critical issues.
