Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is attending the Med9 Summit of Euro-Mediterranean countries today, where the escalating tensions in the Middle East will be a primary focus. With the threat of an Israeli strike on Iran looming, concerns are growing about the potential for further escalation in the region.
King Abdullah of Jordan will also be present at the summit, providing insights into the latest developments and the relationship between the European Union and Jordan. Mr. Mitsotakis is expected to emphasize the importance of EU coordination in addressing the unfolding situation, while also reiterating his stance that while Israel has the right to self-defense, a ceasefire is essential to prevent further escalation.
The Middle East turmoil has already led to a surge in migration flows, a pressing issue for the Mediterranean countries. As the EU's natural border, these countries are bearing the brunt of this pressure. Prime Minister Mitsotakis is anticipated to advocate for a unified European approach, including increased funding for managing migration flows, supporting frontline nations, and enhancing returns. He will also stress the need for full implementation of the EU's Migration and Asylum Pact.
Migration will also be a key topic at the upcoming European Council meeting in Brussels. Mediterranean countries are seeking more funds to manage migration flows and assist neighboring countries in accepting returned migrants. The Med9 Summit will serve as a platform for preliminary discussions ahead of this important meeting.
In addition to migration and the Middle East, the European Council agenda will include the competitiveness of the EU economy, the Draghi report, updates on the war in Ukraine, and the priorities of the new European Commission cycle.
The Med9 group, which includes Cyprus, France, Greece, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Malta, Portugal, and Slovenia, will play a crucial role in shaping the EU's response to these pressing issues.
