Greece’s Minister of National Economy and Deputy Leader of New Democracy, Mr. Kostis Chatzidakis, visited Lesbos on Friday to attend the New Year’s pie-cutting event hosted by the Lesbos Regional Organization of New Democracy (DEEP Lesvos).

During his visit, Mr. Chatzidakis met with local business leaders and municipal officials. Accompanied by former Minister and Lesbos Member of Parliament Mr. Charalampos Athanasiou, the Minister spoke with local media, emphasizing that “the islands have moved past the major challenges of the migration crisis.” He attributed this progress to ongoing development projects, particularly the Tsiknias Dam, which is set to begin construction soon.

According to Mr. Chatzidakis, these initiatives are setting the stage for the North Aegean islands to experience a significant tourism boom.

The Minister also recognized the role of the visa express program in driving tourism growth to the islands.

When asked whether the program would be extended, Mr. Chatzidakis stated, “The government has no reason to prevent the further development of the islands.”

Mr. Chatzidakis highlighted several completed infrastructure projects on Lesbos, including the new Kalloni-Sigri road. “The first signature on that project was mine, and I am very pleased it has been completed,” he said. He also praised the upgraded airport, calling it a “modern gateway” that, along with the port, provides a significant boost to the island’s development.

VAT Reduction Expansion Under Review

Regarding the potential expansion of reduced VAT rates to additional islands, Mr. Chatzidakis commented on the European Commission’s approval in 2022 for Greece to apply such measures starting in 2025.

“We are examining the issue and are looking at it positively,” he said. “However, I don’t have any concrete announcements to make at this stage.

Once the 2025 budget is finalized, it would be premature for the Minister of National Economy to make any declarations before further discussions with the EU,” he concluded.
