Milena Apostolaki has announced her bid for the presidency of Pasok, driven by a belief that Greece needs a new progressive force to meet the public's demand for political change.

In an exclusive interview with Greece’s ERT national broadcaster, Ms. Apostolaki emphasised that the European election results highlighted a societal and political necessity for transformation.

Despite the public's clear desire for change, she noted the absence of a party ready to fulfil this need, motivating her decision to run for leadership.

Ms. Apostolaki underscored the importance of assessing electoral outcomes with a level-headed approach. She recalled that she did not initially advocate for a change in leadership.

But the dynamics within Pasok shifted when Nikos Androulakis called for internal party elections on October 6.

Ms. Apostolaki highlighted the need for Greece to experience a political revival similar to the UK's recent resurgence of the Labour Party after 14 years out of power. She believes that this shift is both a social and political imperative for the nation.

When asked about her readiness to be prime minister, Ms. Apostolaki said that anyone assuming such a responsibility must be prepared. She highlighted her extensive parliamentary experience, ministerial roles, and involvement in Pasok’s top political bodies as qualifications, describing these experiences as invaluable.

Ms. Apostolaki also emphasized the necessity for Pasok “to turn a new page.”

Her proposed model includes a streamlined central body meeting weekly, a team of advisors around the president, and a coordinated parliamentary group with clear guidance and legitimacy in political decisions.

Regarding potential alliances, Ms. Apostolaki asserted that Pasok should focus on forming connections with society rather than aligning with Syriza’s leadership.

She emphasised building relationships with voters from other parties and those who abstain from voting. Ms. Apostolaki affirmed her belief that PASOK can once again become a central pillar in Greek politics, as it has been in the past.
