A devastating wildfire is causing widespread destruction in the Amari Municipality of Rethymno, Crete, particularly affecting olive groves.
The fire has led to the evacuation of nine villages following multiple alerts issued through the 112 emergency service.
All fire fighting forces in Crete have been mobilized to combat the blaze.
Minister of Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias was due to arrive at the island to meet with key officials including the Deputy Chief of the Fire Brigade, the Amari Mayor, the Crete Governor, and other senior officials to strategize and coordinate firefighting efforts.
Firefighting teams are focusing on areas where the fire has rekindled.
The villages of Platanos and Apodoulou are currently under threat, and there have also been flare-ups in Vathiako and Agia Paraskevi.
Mayor Mourtzanos has identified these four villages as the most challenging fronts, especially before nightfall when aerial firefighting operations had to be suspended. A total of 13 helicopters and aircraft were supporting ground forces until darkness fell.
The fire has already consumed thousands of acres of land, predominantly olive groves. Nine villages have been evacuated, including Agia Paraskevi, Platanos, Apodoulou, Vathiako, Lochria, Adraktos, Rizikas, Satta, and Chordaki.
The situation remains critical as firefighters continue to battle the flames.
Local authorities are urging residents to heed evacuation orders and stay safe. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but the impact on agriculture and local communities is expected to be severe.
