Announcing the end of the registration process for postal voting, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis began a press briefing on Tuesday by noting that the number of Greeks abroad who registered to vote in the upcoming European Parliament elections was 280% higher than the number participating in the general elections of June 2023.
"The overwhelming majority, as expected, were Greeks residing in countries of Europe, while registrations have been recorded in 93 different countries where no polling station was set up in the June elections," Marinakis said, listing some of the countries involved.
"This means that Greek voters resident in these countries, if the possibility of voting by post had not been established, could not have exercised their right to vote without travelling to Greece," he pointed out. "With the postal vote we give the citizens more chances for participation and we strengthen democracy," the spokesperson added.
Marinakis said that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be speaking in Parliament at 18:00 during the debate on the reorganisation of the courts to speed up justice, through an upgrade of district court judges to create 2,100 first-instance court judges who will greatly speed up the issue of primary-level rulings. He said the mergers were expected to increase the output of these courts by up to 17%.
He also referred to the National Strategy for People with Disabilities 2024-2030 presented by Minister of State Akis Skertsos, saying the main aim was to increase the visibility of those with disabilities, through 170 horizontal, targeted actions.
The spokesperson went on to outline other bills being prepared by the government, such as that for bonuses and incentives for civil servants, as well as a series of government actions, such as the housing and work for the homeless bill passed by Parliament.
He concluded the press briefing by announcing that a meeting of the Government National Security Council (KYSEA) chaired by the prime minister will take place at the Maximos Mansion at 10:00 on Wednesday morning.
