A 61-year-old man on the Greek island of Kos has been arrested and charged with attempted homicide after allegedly attacking his wife while she slept Thursday morning.
Police say the man struck the woman with a metal pipe before stabbing her multiple times with two knives, causing severe injuries to her hands, neck, and head.
"She has severed tendons in her hands," a police source said.
The victim managed to escape and seek help from a neighbor who happened to be a police officer. The officer called for emergency services and then found the husband injured in the yard.
Authorities are investigating how the husband sustained his injuries.
The woman remains hospitalized and has reportedly requested a panic button for protection.
The incident has shocked the local community and brought renewed attention to the issue of domestic violence in Greece.
