A 48-year-old man is currently fighting for his life in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the General Hospital of Ilia after suffering a venomous spider bite.
The man initially sought medical attention at the hospital on Tuesday afternoon, complaining of unbearable pain in his leg.
However, at that time, he was unaware that the pain was caused by a spider bite and had previously visited a private orthopedic doctor due to a misunderstanding about the source of the pain.
By midday Wednesday, his condition had rapidly deteriorated, and he began exhibiting symptoms consistent with a venomous bite.
Medical professionals at the hospital immediately recognized the severity of the situation and initiated life-saving measures.
The man was intubated and remains in critical but stable condition at the "Andreas Papandreou" Hospital. The medical team is working tirelessly to save his life, consulting closely with the poison control center for guidance on treatment and anti-venom administration.
The incident occurred while the 48-year-old man was vacationing in Ilia.
He sustained the bite high on his thigh, but the exact species of spider responsible for the envenomation is yet to be determined.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors in the area to exercise caution and be aware of the potential dangers of venomous creatures, especially during the warmer months when they are more active.
