Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has celebrated Italy’s “excellent” relations with Greece, underlining the countries’ shared geostrategic identity and cooperation on critical issues including security, migration, and climate challenges.
“Our two countries share a common geostrategic identity,” said Ms. Meloni during her annual press conference, held on Thursday.
She emphasized her productive relationship with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, stating, “We collaborate on many issues with a shared approach, including security, defense, migration – which affects few European countries as profoundly as ours – and environmental efforts to address extreme climate events.”
Ms. Meloni noted the increasing influence of southern European nations, citing the recent North-South Summit.
“Countries once seen as ‘not exactly serious’ are now united in addressing major European security concerns,” she remarked.
Looking ahead, Ms. Meloni announced an Italy-Greece intergovernmental conference in Rome this February, where new agreements and a joint declaration will be signed.
“Our goal is to formalize the breadth of our cooperation with agreements on particularly important issues,” she explained.
Additionally, Ms. Meloni highlighted Italy and Greece’s collaboration within the European Council and in forums such as MED9 and MED5.
“Mr. Mitsotakis and I sit at the same table, playing leading roles in shaping the region’s future,” she concluded.
