After years of delays, construction of the Ioannina-Kakavia highway is finally moving forward. Epirus Regional Governor Alexandros Kachrimanis announced that the contract for the 70-kilometer road project is expected to be signed by the end of the year.
The highway, an extension of the Ionian Motorway, will connect Ioannina to the Greek-Albanian border at Kakavia. This vital link promises to improve regional connectivity, boost trade, and ease traffic congestion.
"We are confident that the contract will be signed by December 31st," said Governor Kachrimanis, who expects Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to attend the signing ceremony.
The project has been divided into two sections: a 46.4-kilometer stretch from Ioannina to Kalpaki, and a 23.1-kilometer segment from Kalpaki to Kakavia. Construction is estimated to take 54 months, with completion slated for spring 2029.
The new highway is expected to significantly enhance road safety, reduce travel times, and improve access to the region.
