Greece’s economy has made a surprise comeback but its model for growth has to change, according to Alexander Exarchou, the Vice President and CEO of Intrakat.
Speaking at the 9th Delphi Economic Forum, Mr. Exarchou referred to Greece’s economic recovery, cautioning however against complacency and underscoring the need for a sustainable and productive economic structure.
“Few could have foreseen the current state of the Greek economy,” Mr. Exarchou said. “Survival,” though, he quipped, “does not equate to victory. “We have not become Switzerland or Sweden; we have merely survived.”
Mr. Exarchou pressed the need for growth saying reliance on tourism and domestic consumption alone were insufficient for long-term prosperity.
The Vice President called for unity and a collective effort to shift towards a new production model, a goal he deems essential for all political parties and governments. He cited the recent pandemic and the Ukraine conflict as reminders of the volatility that can disrupt economic stability.
