An international conference aimed at combating drug trafficking kicked off today in the Greek capital, bringing together representatives from 132 countries.

The event, organized jointly by the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), seeks to bolster global cooperation against drug cartels.

In his opening remarks, Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis underscored the importance of international collaboration in the fight against drugs.

"We must work together to reduce and ultimately eradicate this scourge," he said, emphasizing the need for enhanced information sharing and operational coordination.

Chrysochoidis highlighted the growing threat posed by synthetic drugs and the role of international criminal networks in trafficking illicit substances.

He called for a multifaceted approach that includes law enforcement cooperation, financial investigations, and technological advancements.

Anne Milgram, the head of the DEA, echoed the importance of international collaboration. She noted the increasing sophistication of drug trafficking operations and the need for innovative strategies to combat them.

The conference is expected to produce recommendations for strengthening global cooperation against drug trafficking and addressing emerging challenges in the field.
