Anna Vasiliki Karapanagiotou, the interim general director of the National Archaeological Museum, has resigned from her position, which she held since January 2021.

Her resignation, submitted on Jan. 21, 2025, was formally accepted by Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, as announced in the Government Gazette (FEK) on Feb. 24. This marks a significant shift in the leadership of one of Greece’s most prominent cultural institutions.

In addition to Ms. Karapanagiotou’s departure, the resignation of Dimitris Oikonomou, professor emeritus at the University of Thessaly and chairman of the museum’s board of directors, was also accepted.

Mr. Oikonomou had submitted his resignation on Nov. 18, 2024. Following these changes, Ioanna Dretta, a civil engineer, has been appointed as the interim chair of the board, while Andreas Kourkoulas, professor emeritus of architecture at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), will serve as vice-chair.

In the interim, Konstantinos Nikolentzos, head of the museum’s Department of Prehistoric, Egyptian, Cypriot and Eastern Antiquities, will assume the duties of general director, as stipulated by law.

This temporary arrangement ensures continuity in the museum’s operations while a permanent replacement is sought.

The National Archaeological Museum, home to some of Greece’s most treasured antiquities, plays a central role in preserving and showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage.

The leadership changes come at a critical time as the museum continues to navigate challenges related to modernization, visitor engagement and the preservation of its vast collections.

The resignations and subsequent appointments highlight the ongoing efforts to stabilize the museum’s administration and maintain its mission amid evolving priorities in Greece’s cultural sector.

As the institution moves forward, the focus will remain on ensuring its continued relevance and accessibility to both local and international audiences.
